After Gustav in Mississippi

Wednesday, September 03, 2008

  • Mississippi Center for Justice

Thank you for your messages of concern and support as Hurricane Gustav made its way through the Gulf Coast. I am pleased to report that our coast board and staff members are safe.

We are deeply relieved that our worst fears were not realized. However, major transportation routes were flooded and remain closed, power outages are widespread, and communication is difficult with circuits overloaded. We are especially concerned about our clients in southwest Mississippi, where the low-income town of Pearlington -- still struggling to recover from Katrina -- experienced a reported 19-foot storm surge and some of the worst flooding in Gustav¹s path. In coming days, we will assess the situation as we did after Katrina and keep you informed. We are also in contact with our partners in harder-hit Louisiana to see how we can be of assistance to their recovery efforts.

We are gratified that we can proceed with our Champions of Justice Weekend, September 12-14, including our road trip to the coast. It will be a particularly interesting time to visit the coast and see for yourself the needs that still exist post-Katrina, as well as new needs in the wake of Gustav. We hope you will make plans to join us. More information is on our web site,

We will also post updates on the web site, including volunteer opportunities, as they become available.

With our most heartfelt thanks for your continued support of our work, Martha
