Severe storms and flooding hit areas of Michigan from June 25 to June 26, 2021. On July 15, 2021, a Major Disaster Declaration was issued for the state of Michigan, making federal funding available to individuals and households who sustained damage as a result of the severe storms and flooding. Assistance can include grants for temporary housing and home repairs, low-cost loans to cover uninsured property losses, and other programs to help individuals and business owners recover from the effects of the disaster. People in the following areas are eligible to receive federal disaster assistance. Additional areas may be designated later. Please check here for updates.

Residents and businesses affected by this disaster can apply for government disaster relief benefits in several ways:

- Text “DRC” and a zip code to 43362 (4FEMA) to locate a Disaster Recovery Center in your area (standard message and data rates apply), or by
- Calling 800-621-3362 (FEMA). Applicants who use 711 or Video Relay Service may also call 800-621-3362. People who are deaf, hard of hearing or have a speech disability and use a TTY may call 800-462-7585. The toll-free numbers are open from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Eastern Time, seven days a week. Multilingual operators are available. Press 2 for Spanish and press 3 for other languages.

LEGAL ASSISTANCE AND RESOURCES
- A LEGAL AID HOTLINE is now available for survivors in Michigan who cannot pay for an attorney:
- Survivors may CALL 1-866-418-8315 between 9:00am and 5:00pm, Monday through Thursday and 9:00am and 1:00pm on Friday (local time) to request assistance.

The hotline is a partnership between the ABA YLD DLS Team and Lakeshore Legal Aid, Legal Services of South Central Michigan, Bodman PLC, Dykema, Honigman LLP, and Miller Canfield.

- Lakeshore Legal Aid serves low-income people, seniors, and survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault in a holistic manner to address clients’ legal issues and improve our communities. Lakeshore provides free direct legal representation in 17 counties in southeast Michigan and the thumb and client intake, advice, and brief legal services throughout Michigan via our attorney-staffed hotline, the Counsel & Advocacy Law Line. Its practice areas include housing, family, consumer, elder, education, and public benefits law.
- Legal Services of South Central Michigan (LSSCM) provides free civil legal assistance to low income persons with emphasis on homelessness prevention, domestic violence prevention, assisting in accessing health care, food, and needs-based income programs. In addition to representation in individual cases, LSSCM is part of a network of agencies providing services to the community’s most vulnerable members. LSSCM engages in systemic advocacy to help alleviate the barriers and hurdles faced by low income individuals.
- United Policyholders (UP) is a national non-profit 501(c)(3) consumer advocacy group that specializes in helping disaster victims with insurance claim issues. UP also trains case managers and legal aid lawyers to assist clients with insurance and recovery matters. For help with flood, wind, hurricane, and auto insurance questions.
- ABA Disaster Legal Services Program: Through the Disaster Legal Services Program, the ABA Young Lawyers Division (ABA-YLD) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) provide immediate temporary legal assistance to disaster survivors at no charge.
